Southern Trout Magazine Announces 2017 Legends of the Fly Hall of Fame Inductees

09 Jan

Voting concluded last week to determine the 2017 inductees to the ST “Legends of the Fly” Hall of Fame February 3rd at the Atlanta Fly Fishing Show. More than 13,000 votes were cast and all of the two dozen nominees received respectable numbers of votes. Only the six nominees with the highest tally of votes will be inducted. Voting participation was quite overwhelming.

This year’s class includes the legendary North Carolina fly fisherman and fly tier, the late Don Howell. Host of the popular television show, and Cabela’s “Fly Fishing Ambassador” Curtis Fleming of W.V., is in. Gary Merriman of Atlanta, Ga., whom many regard as the “Fly Fishing Ambassador of the Peach State” is in.

SEOPA member and past President J. Wayne Fears of Huntsville, Ala., and author of the first modern era book on Southern Appalachian trout fishing is in. Former SEOPA member and past President Soc Clay of Fern Hollow, Ky., lifelong fly fisherman, pioneer outdoor writer and at one-time the Poet Laurette of the Bluegrass State is in. Legendary pre-national park era fly fisherman and hounds man, the late “Uncle” Mark Cathey of Bryson City, North Carolina, rounds out the class of 2017.

The enthusiasm shown for the first year of this ST/Fly Fishing Show sponsored event has been humbling. The 45-minute induction ceremony will be held on February 3rd, late afternoon. Southern Trout will give away a new Hardy fly rod in a drawing at the conclusion of the event. For more information or to inquire about being a sponsor of the event, contact Don Kirk
